BOL/1 - Bolsover's writings and related papers on Russia, the Soviet Union and European history (circa) (1928-1985)

Bolsover had an interest in Russia from the very start of his career as his BA and MA theses show. However in his first posts after obtaining a Ph.d from SSEES as resident tutor in adult education at Birmingham University (1933-1938) and lecturer in modern European history at Manchester University (1938-1943) he studied and taught widely on European history generally rather than on strictly Russian affairs. Later on his career after service in the British Embassy in Moscow and becoming Director of SSEES his writings were far more focused on Russian history, particularly foreign relations and on the economy of the Soviet Union.

Contents: Bolsover's writings including his BA and MA theses, lecture notes, texts of broadcasts and book reviews re the Soviet Union and Russian and European history. Also contains some writings by others and related papers used by Bolsover to inform his writing these include reports and papers issued by the British Government - Bolsover would have access to them as a result of his work as attache and first secretary to the British Embassy in Moscow 1943-1947.
Note: unless otherwise stated writings in this class are presumed to be by Bolsover.

BOL/2 - Reports on study trips to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (1954-1982)

Previous number: part of boxes 1 and 15

Bolsover presumably received the reports by Foreign Office personnel as a result of his position as former first secretary of the British Embassy in Moscow.

Contents: reports on study trips and delegations to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe taken by Bolsover and others, mainly by personnel of the British Embassy in Moscow.

Bolsover was Director of SSEES 1947-1976.

Contents: papers re SSEES including notes on R W Seton-Watson, letter on the composition of SSEES Council and drafts of articles by Bolsover on SSEES.

BOL/4 - Notes on Russian history and the Soviet Union taken from original documents and secondary sources (circa) (1933-1985)

Previous number: boxes 2 and 3 and part of boxes 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12

In addition to living in Moscow 1943-1947 whilst he was first secretary at the British Embassy in Moscow, Bolsover made several trips to the Soviet Union in order to carry out archival research.

Contents: notes on Russian history particularly foreign relations, the Soviet Union particularly the economy and a few on more general European history taken by Bolsover from original documents and from secondary sources.
