Chemical Safety Sub-Committee: terms of reference

Purpose


The Work Health and Safety Committee (WHSC) has established the Chemical Safety Sub-Committee (CSSC) to make recommendations regarding chemical safety. The CSSC will advise the WHSC when aÌýtopic is or could be considered a significant hazard.ÌýÌý

Organisation and meetings


  1. MakeÌýrecommendations to the WHSC for final consultation and decisions via submission of a paper and addition to the WHSC agenda.
  2. TakeÌýand respond to any particular or general direction given by the WHSC.
  3. AgreeÌýannually with the WHSCÌýthe scope of the topic covered by the CSSCÌýincluding the requirement to establish or continue any work groups.
    1. Review the terms of reference annuallyÌýand documentÌýthe discussion and action required.Ìý
    2. Provide quarterly and annual reports to the WHSC.
    3. SetÌýthe number of meetings per year.
    4. SetÌýthe number of members and number required for a quorum.
    5. Set,Ìýif required, any additional training or competence requirements for members including the Chair.
    6. SetÌýkey performance measures.

Duties and responsibilities


  1. Advise on all matters relating to chemical safety at any site owned, rentedÌýor controlled by UCL.
  2. Advise on all matters relating to work with hazardous chemicals including the storage by any person employed by UCL, including students.
  3. To propose, develop, monitorÌýand report on the implementation and effectiveness of Õ¬ÄÐÊÓƵ policy with respect to work activities with hazardous chemicals.
  4. To cover the following topics:
    1. Chemical Safety Guidance.
    2. Best practice at UCL.
    3. Stock/cataloguing systems.
    4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    5. Waste management (including spills procedure).
