Course content

The techniques and concepts learned will be fundamental to filmmaking participants and people interested in other audio-visual media.

You will study the essentials of location audio recording, refine critical listening skills, and explore the captivating world of ambient sounds in visual storytelling. You will also gain hands-on expertise in dialogue editing and sound post-production processes, including sound design and mixing for moving images, fiction and documentary. 

This course suits anyone who wants to get practical experience and already has some audio production experience.

Course structure

The Sound Production for Moving Image short course is taking place between 8 and 12 July 2024 at UCL East.

The course is taught through lectures, group discussions and practical exercises.

Day 1: Location Sound Recording

  • Meet your tutor and set course expectations.
  • Dive into listening practices and fundamental audio principles.
  • Get hands-on with location sound recording equipment and techniques.
  • Explore different types of microphones and their applications.
  • Master capturing dialogue, room tone, and ambience for authentic soundscapes.

Day 2: Basic Sound Postproduction for Films

  • Understand the various stages of audio postproduction for films.
  • Learn basic audio editing techniques using Adobe Audition.
  • Explore layering sounds and dialogue editing for seamless integration.
  • Discover essential plugins such as reverb, equalizer, and compressor for enhancing audio quality.

Day 3: Sound Design

  • Uncover the principles of sound design and its role in storytelling.
  • Analyse case studies to understand effective sound design in cinema.
  • Experiment with manipulating and processing audio to create dynamic effects.
  • Immerse yourself in the world of immersive sound using innovative tools like Sound Particles.

Day 4: Basic Mixing

  • Master basic mixing techniques to achieve professional-quality audio.
  • Explore stereo 2.0 and surround mixing principles for cinematic immersion.
  • Learn about export and delivery formats to ensure your sound is ready for the big screen.

Day 5: Applying Sound Design: Short Portfolio

  • Craft sound for a four-minute film scene, integrating field recording, dialogue editing, sound design, and basic mixing principles.
  • Receive personalized feedback and guidance from your tutors to refine your portfolio.
