An introduction to working with Õ¬ÄÐÊÓƵ Media Relations and the media
Course Description:

Presenter Information:
The session is delivered by the Õ¬ÄÐÊÓƵ Media Relations team, the university's central press office. Our team regularly secures global media coverage of UCL research, and consists of experienced communications professionals and former journalists who have worked at news outlets such as the Guardian, Mirror and Press Association. How to work with UCL's Media Relations team to promote academic work in the external news media, by gaining a better understanding of how newsrooms operate and what makes a strong news story.

Aimed at doctoral researchers and academic/research staff who have had little or no experience of working with the media and who want to learn more about how best to work with the Õ¬ÄÐÊÓƵ Media Relations Team and present their research to national and international journalists and news outlets.
This session will cover:

  • Introduction to working with Õ¬ÄÐÊÓƵ Media Relations
  • Why do media engagement, and how to make it work for you
  • What makes a research story 'newsworthy' ? finding your news hook
  • The press release process ? understanding embargoes and quality control
  • Storytelling, writing and interview tips
  • UCL media success stories - why they made headlines
  • Different channels and ways to promote your work

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Know who to contact in the media team and how we can help
  • Know what makes the news and understand what the key elements of a press release are
  • Have a better understanding of how the UK media works and how to promote your work to more audiences
  • Have more confidence in speaking to the media
  • Know how to add yourself as a media expert and deal with media requests
