Knowing when not to give in: the building of Walmer Yard

Fenella Collingridge discusses the architectural process of transforming intention into material reality, with the building of Walmer Yard. She investigates the struggle ofÌýturningÌýdrawings that imply space, movement and tactile materiality into a sequence of physical volumes and surfaces that create a sense of place.ÌýÌý

BiographyÌýÌý

Fenella Collingridge is a partner in Ìýwith Peter Salter. She graduated with Honours at the Architectural Association and has a first class degree in Painting from Camberwell School of Art.

Fenella has taught architecture at the Architectural Association, East London University, the Royal College of Art and The Bartlett School of Architecture. Fenella’s long association with Peter Salter began when she joined Peter’s unit as a student at the AA. From 2007 – 2017 Fenella worked with Peter on the design and construction of Walmer Yard, winner of the RIBA National Award.

In parallel she has run a research project, , with the painter Antoni Malinowski, to explore the relationship between colour, tone, texture and form in architecture. In 2018 SalterÌýCollingridge exhibited their work at the Venice Biennale.
