Urban Lighting, published by RIBA in March 2019, explores the needs and experiences of people at night and how these can be addressed by public lighting. Case studies provide in-depth analysis of real-life projects and will help the reader to understand lighting designers’ own experiences, including post-installation observations. Written in an accessible style by an array of experts, Urban Lighting is an essential book for practitioners, academics and students alike.

The National Urban Design Awards, organised by the Urban Design Group, are now in their 10th year. There are four Book Award finalists, selected by a panel of expert judges chaired by Georgina Butina Watson, Professor of Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University.

Juliet Bidgood, architect and urban designer and a member of the judging panel said:

“Urban Lighting is an impressive multi-disciplinary collaboration between researchers from five universities and practicing lighting designers. They bring their experience of large-scale high-profile masterplans and public realm projects such as the Olympics and King’s Cross, and of generating innovative exploratory research. The book aims to exemplify an evidence-based approach to design."

The winner of the Book Award will be announced at the end of April.
