UCL Sustainable Building Design for Climate Change (11th - 13th July 2021)

Climate change is seen as the biggest challenge of our times, with buildings and the built environment accounting for nearly 40% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. Tackling these emissions will be a major challenge for our future graduates. But how do we design and create zero-carbon buildings?

This is the question we will address across this 3-day summer school. Each day you will be introduced to some fundamental principles of architecture and engineering, learning how to apply these to sustainable building design. There will be walking tours, expert talks, workshops and tutorials. You’ll get to meet and work with our current students and receive some insights into UCAS applications, interviews and portfolios. 

Achieving truly low-carbon buildings requires the input of a variety of different subject specialists, engineers, architects, physicists, designers, behavioural scientist, material specialists and many more. If you have a broad range of interests, particularly across science/engineering and art/design, then this is the summer school for you.

Event logistics

• °Â³ó´Ç?ÌýThere are no specific subject requirements. Students may be interested in architecture, engineering, design, applied science – particularly if you enjoy both technical and creative work!
• °Â³ó±ð²Ô?Ìý11th - 13th July 2022 – 10:30 – 16:00
• °Â³ó±ð°ù±ð?ÌýUCL Bloomsbury Campus (11th 12th July) & Online (13th July)

±·´Ç³Ù±ð:Ìýyou will need to be able to attend in-person on the 11th & 12th July, between 10:30am – 4pm. Participants are expected to be able to arrange their own travel/accommodation with the formal sessions only taking place between the hours listed above. 

Applications

The event is open to UK school pupils in year 12 (England and Wales)/year 12 (Northern Ireland)/S5 (Scotland). To apply, you must meet at least one of the eligibility criteria (/widening-participation/eligibility-criteria): at a minimum, you should be attending a non-selective state school. To participate, you will need access to a laptop/PC/Tablet and a stable internet connection for steaming video.

The course is free for students attending non-selective state schools and colleges.
