The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed structural defects in how markets promote welfare and how governments build resilient economies. Philanthropic capital often tries to help fill some of the gaps, re-establishing scrutiny whether the current role of philanthropy in society itself points to a structural defect. This conversation explores who is financing what, and why it matters 鈥� from philanthropies to government to business.

When does philanthropic capital entrench inequalities and build value extractive practices? When can philanthropic capital enable visionary activities? How can rethinking the ownership and application of philanthropic capital and motivations help reward and foster collective value creation? 听听

About the Speakers

Anand Giridharadas

Author of 'Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World'

Anand Giridharadas is a writer. He is the author of a number of books including most recently 鈥�鈥� (2018). He is an editor-at-large for TIME, an on-air political analyst for MSNBC, and a visiting scholar at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University. He is a former columnist and correspondent for The New York Times, and has also written for The Times's arts, business, and travel pages, and its , , and , including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and elsewhere.

Anand has appeared regularly on TV and radio in both the United States and globally, and has given talks numerous talks including on the main stage of TED and . He has been the recipient of honors from the Society of Publishers in Asia, the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism at Yale, the Henry Crown Fellowship of the Aspen Institute, the 800-CEO-READ Business Book of the Year award, the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award for Humanism in Culture from Harvard University, and the New York Public Library鈥檚 Helen Bernstein Award.

Mariana Mazzucato听is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value听at University College London (UCL), where she is the Founding Director of the UCL听Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose.听听She is the author of three听highly-acclaimed books:听听(2018), and the newly released,听听(2021).听She advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led inclusive and sustainable growth. Her current roles include being Chair of the World Health Organisation鈥檚 Economic Council on Health for All and a member of the South African听President鈥檚 Economic Advisory Council,听the Scottish Government鈥檚 Council of Economic Advisors, and the United Nations High-level Advisory Board (HLAB) on Economic and Social Affairs, among others.
