IIPP and The Rockefeller Foundation’s renewed commitment to the Mission-Oriented Innovation Network

28 April 2022

This collaboration will see a strengthening of MOIN as a learning community alongside the creation of a dedicated MOIN South Africa chapter.

South Africa

The Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and The Rockefeller Foundation are delighted to announce the renewal of their collaboration and shared commitment to IIPP’s Mission-Oriented Innovation Network (MOIN), alongside the creation of a dedicated MOIN South Africa chapter.

Supported by The Rockefeller Foundation since 2018, MOIN is a global network which brings together public organizations to share the challenges and opportunities they face when stepping outside of a static market fixing role into a more dynamic market shaping one to tackle grand societal challenges. The network currently has over one hundred participating members and includes public banks, innovation agencies and place-based entities around the world.

This renewed collaboration will build on work to date by continuing to support and grow the core MOIN Global network to create a sustainable, long term learning community. Alongside this, the work  will support the building of a situated academic and practitioner community in South Africa with a focus on mission-oriented approaches to achieve a just, green transition.

“As interest in IIPP continues to grow, the Mission-Oriented Innovation Network (MOIN) offers a collaborative learning platform where theories meet practice and where policy practitioners can interact with IIPP, its research and practice on the ground. We are therefore delighted to renew our partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation to strengthen MOIN and are excited to open a new MOIN South Africa chapter of this work.

Prof. Mariana Mazzucato, Founding Director of IIPP

“We need new ideas and visionary institutions that can lead on big, multisectoral missions like equitable access to energy and low carbon economies that deliver prosperity for all. Mission-oriented innovation is just such an idea, and the MOIN members are those types of institutions. The Rockefeller Foundation is proud to work with IIPP in building this pathbreaking network, and excited to support South Africa’s continued leadership in mission-oriented innovation.

Kevin O’Neil, Director, New Frontiers, The Rockefeller Foundation
