Gary Lye awarded IChemE Donald Medal

Head of Department, Professor Gary Lye FREng, FIChemE, has been awarded the Donald Medal, named after a former Ramsay Professor at UCL. It is awarded by the Biochemical Engineering Special Interest Group of the IChemE for outstanding services in Biochemical Engineering

Professor Gary Lye, the Head of UCL Biochemical Engineering,听is the latest recipient of the Donald Medal from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Gary is the Head of the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering. He is an internationally-respected researcher and teacher in biochemical engineering especially in the fields of bioreactor design and operation and in industrial biotechnology with a major impact in biopharmaceuticals and sustainable and environmentally-friendly manufacture. Under Gary鈥檚 leadership the department鈥檚 undergraduate, masters, doctoral and post-experience programmes continue to thrive producing skilled biochemical engineers that contribute to the growth of the international bioindustry.听

Gary joins a number of current and former UCL staff and alumni who have received the Donald Medal.

Maxwell Donald (UCL Chemical Engineering) and Eric Crook (UCL Biochemistry) were early supports of establishing Biochemical Engineering at UCL. They were co-founders with Elmer Gaden (Columbia University) of the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering in 1959. The IChemE Donald Medal is named after Maxwell. The department鈥檚 undergraduate Crook Society is named after Eric. The department鈥檚 post-doctoral society, the Clarke Society, is named after another early pioneer of the discipline at UCL, Patricia Clarke FRS.
