The Provost has considered all the comments received from members of the Faculty and has recommended to Council that be appointed Dean of Social and Historical Sciences, in succession to Professor Ray Harris, for a five-year term with effect from 1 October 2008. The Chair of Council has, on behalf of Council, formally approved the Provost's recommendation.

The Provost is grateful to all who contributed to the consultation process and especially grateful to Professor Smith for agreeing to take on the role of Dean. The Provost would also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Harris for his outstanding leadership of the faculty during his time as Dean.
