Boyi Pang

Background

Boyi joined EIL and APL in September 2023 as a PhD student. Prior to that, he received an MSc in Advanced Materials Science in 2023 from University College London and a BSc in Chemical Engineering and Processing in 2022 from Harbin Institute of Technology. While pursuing his bachelor's degree, he was nominated as the Most Influential Graduate, founded the Haiyin Education Studio, and the Huanhai Road STEM Study Studio, and led dozens of his classmates to achieve financial independence. A project he led on cathode materials for high-nickel ternary lithium-ion batteries was awarded 30 million RMB investment intention. He is an innovative, business-minded and leadership candidate with a passion for lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles.

Research Summary

Acoustic methods have found increased interest in the last five years to monitor the state-of-charge and/or health of batteries. This research project will develop the methodologies to conduct acoustic monitoring on cylindrical Li-ion cells – specifically addressing the challenges of enabling good mating between acoustic transducers and the cell and developing an understanding of the substantially more complex signals which are received. The work will deploy machine learning methods to explore the subtle changes which occur in the acoustic signals to inform improved cell monitoring algorithms with the intention of deploying this improved capability in battery monitoring systems. These will then be verified against real cell performance to validate the improvements. The research project involves both experimental and modelling aspects which, when developed in concert will lead to improved understanding of the aging and degradation of Li-ion cells.
