Alvina LaiAssociate Professor,ÌýInstitute of Health Informatics I have worked on a wide range of topics, ranging from evolution to health genomics. I am particularly interested in how we can use real-world data to tackle cancer and infectious diseases. I would also like to expand my research to include non-communicable diseases such as metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Andrew MacAskillSir Henry DaleÌýFellow,ÌýDivision of Biosciences We are working to understand how neurons in the brain communicate with each other to allow them to encode emotional behaviours and make decisions. Problems with this communication underlie the vast majority of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, and so our aim is to find novel ways to combat these diseases by gaining a greater understanding of the processes that they destroy.ÌýÌý Other research interests include Children and Young People's Mental HealthÌý´¥ÌýMood DisordersÌý´¥ÌýNeuroscienceÌý´¥ÌýPharmacology |

Rachel PearsonResearch Assistant,ÌýGreat Ormond StreetÌýInstitute of Child Health I am currently working on a research project which will utilise linked family courts and healthcare data to examine women who become involved in care proceedings and have children placed into out-of-home care. In particular, we aim to identify opportunities for greater input in a healthcare setting to improve the health and wellbeing of mothers involved in recurrent care proceedings and to reduce child maltreatment. Francesca SolmiSenior Research Fellow,ÌýDivision of Psychiatry My research broadly focuses on studying the risk factors for the development of eating disorders across the life-span.ÌýAs part of my Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowship I am studying whether inflammation - conceptualisd as exposure to prenatal and childhood infections, high genetic risk, autoimmunity - increases a person's risk of developing eating disorders. To do this, I use large general population datasets, including both biological and environmental data, and causal inference methods.ÌýI am also interested in studying inequalities in access to services and evaluating the effectiveness of current treatments for eating disorders using electronic medical records.
