Description

This module will provide the student with a world view of current research and the challenges facing Medical Bacteriology. This will include topics such as the global crisis of antibiotic resistance, the threat from new and emerging bacterial pathogens, the impact of resource poor settings on diagnosis and treatment, and the impact of personal microbiome data on human diseases.

The aim of the module is to provide understanding of current challenges, investigative approaches and potential solutions within the discipline. This will include definition of the current state of antibiotic resistance worldwide and consideration of new approaches to treating bacterial infections. It will also consider the advanced ‘omics’ technologies and their utility in experimental bacteriology. Additionally, it will compare and contrast public health issues and diagnosis and treatment of bacterial disease in resource-rich and -poor settings and consider the potential of human microbiome data in diagnosis and treatment of human disease.
