Description
The Epidemiology module is an introductory module which aims to provide a grounding in key concepts in the field of epidemiology. This includes covering topics such as case definition, measuring disease frequency, measures of effect, study design types (including cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, ecological and intervention), bias and confounding, effect modification, causation, infectious disease epidemiology, screening and health surveillance.
More specifically, the module aims to provide you with:
· Basic knowledge of epidemiological concepts and methods principles of study design
· Appreciation of the errors that may arise in epidemiological studies
· Experience in interpreting and evaluating epidemiological data
· Examples of the contribution of epidemiology to knowledge of the main determinants of health and disease
· A foundation on which to build detailed knowledge appropriate to particular research interests
This is a core module for students on the MSc Social Epidemiology, MSc Dental Public Health and MSc Population Health. Spaces are limited to 80.
The module has sessions 2 days per week in Term 1. The majority of sessions will involve a lecture, small group session and independent reading. Small group sessions are designed to consolidate the lecture content by applying them in a variety of contexts relevant to population health.
