Description
This module aims to introduce students to the basic quantitative methods for historians with applications in different historical fields. The first half of the module covers methods of constructing and displaying historical data, providing and interpreting summary statistics, and exploring the relationship between different historical variables, including correlation and causation. The second half focuses on applications of some of these methods in economic history, financial history, spatial history and political history. Each case is discussed with reference to the quantification and data analysis methodology of a published work. Parts of the data analysis will be reproduced in the class by using the original dataset from the relevant source. ÌýThe module is assessed by a written essay which is expected to be based on the quantification of historical evidence and its analysis by using the methods explored in the module.
