BIOS0005 provides an introduction to molecular biology, cell biology and evolution for Year 1 students on the Human Sciences degrees. It facilitates academic and social bonding amongst the students through regular group presentations and tutorials, and a group project.
Students will develop independent learning, problem solving, writing, and presentational skills.

Molecular Biology (five lectures covering the following topics):
- Introduction and biological membranes
- Cellular and subcellular imaging

- Nucleic acids and DNA
- DNA replication

Cell Biology (five lectures covering the following topics):
- Cell membranes, protein synthesis, trafficking and exocytosis
- The cytoskeleton
- Cell motility
- Intracellular transport
- Cell division
- Cell signalling and Cell death
Evolution
- Evolution of Multicellularity
