Description
This module introduces students to the emerging technologies in the field of nanotechnology and its applications to biomedicine. At the nanoscale, physical and chemical (and thereby biological) properties of materials differ from the properties of individual atoms or bulk matter. These nanoscale properties are offering new opportunities for disease diagnosis (eg. quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles) and treatment (eg. targeted nanoparticle drug delivery, nano-targeted radiation therapy). Topics covered in this module include: 1. Why size matters (forces on the nanoscale). 2. The physics of the nanoscale. 3. Nanoparticle drug delivery. 4. Nanoparticles for enhanced theranostics (focus on imaging and radiation therapy). 5. Nanotechnology in Tissue Engineering. 6. Nano-engineering. 7. Nanotoxicity
