Description

This module aims to refine students’ understanding of what the police do and how they should perform their role in a procedurally just manner in modern societies. The module is designed to enable students to understand and critically discuss issues that influence contemporary policing in a rapidly globalising world. The module will provide ample opportunities for students to discuss live issues such as institutional racism and sexism, as well as police misconduct and corruption and how they have affected legitimacy of and trust in the police. The module will frame police community relations and the police’s obligations towards vulnerable populations in the context of different policing models. Students will consider different ways for making the police more accountable. Additionally, the concept of plural policing in modern societies, with the co-existence of public and private policing will be discussed. The module will culminate in a discussion of the first principles of an evidence-based approach to problem solving and its implications for contemporary policing.
