This module is underpinned by the principles of learning and teaching identified by the findings of various research projects and scholarship in the field. As such it aims to provide a conceptual and research-informed grounding for your pedagogical practice by problematizing the contingent nature of effective teaching and reflect the fact that the interventions of teachers or trainers are most effective when they are planned in response to specific learners and their characteristics. The orientation of the module is deliberately generic: on the one hand this is in response to the cross phase and cross subject nature of the intended target audience; on the other it has been done in an attempt to explore that which is to be learned at a level beyond that bounded by specific curricula.

This module takes place during the first year of your PGDip programme. It is designed to explore the principles of learning and teaching, through engagement with literature and research and reflection upon your teaching practice. Each unit has related activities taking up to a recommended 10 learning hours. This module has 10 taught units. Your time will be spent completing activities set, carrying out wider reading, maintaining your Reflective Journal and preparing for associated tutorials. Additional time will be spent engaging in further background reading, online and in person discussion, and independent working.
