Description

This advanced module provides an introduction to key ideas and texts in Queer Theory and analyses representations of queerness (broadly defined) in literature and visual culture. It will include enqueery into practices of queer representation and reading as modes of resisting normative categories of identification in the realms of gender, sexuality, politics and nationhood. Topics may include Trans theory, Queerness as Performance, Queer Memoir, Queering as a Form of Political Critique and Queer Futurity.

By the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • knowledge of a selection key texts in queer theory and how they fit in to a wider theoretical landscape;
  • an awareness of critical and cultural debates about representation, identity, performativity, gender, sexuality and queerness;
  • an ability to distinguish different strands of queer theory and to articulate its development over time;
  • engagement with and an ability to summarise and interpret layers of meaning within a range of primary texts and secondary sources;
  • an ability to manage their own learning outside of the class;
  • an understanding of how to formulate appropriate research questions relating to representations and theories of queerness.
