19 September 2024

Marshgate, One Pool Street, and the UCL East campus have been lauded for their people-centric design. The assessment process recognised the high levels of energy efficiency, strong public transport connections, and sustainable use of materials.

Three certifications were given, one to Marshgate, and two separate certificates for the residential and academic facilities at One Pool Street. BREEAM or the “Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method” is an international benchmark for excellence in sustainable construction.

Professor Paola Lettieri, academic lead for UCL East, noted that the certification validates the valued contributions of colleagues"We are delighted to have had both our Marshgate and One Pool Street buildings at UCL East certified as BREEAM 'Excellent', the result of efforts from the design and construction teams and collaboration with colleagues from across the university."

Paola further explained how environmentally conscious design helped create a building that's good for people and planet. "Both Marshgate and One Pool Street are designed and constructed with sustainability at the forefront resulting in visually distinct buildings with high levels of energy performance and comfort, supporting the cross-disciplinary research, teaching and public engagement taking place at UCL East.

In the words ofBuilding Research Establishmentwho created theEnvironmental Assessment Method it “provides a holistic sustainability assessment framework for buildings and infrastructure, measuring sustainable value.” These values cover categories including:

  • energy efficiency
  • sustainability of building materials
  • transport connections including cycling infrastructure
  • pollution
  • water usage
  • waste, land usage, and ecology.

The high-level of sustainable design in the UCL East campus draws on learning from sustainable new buildings like the UCL Student Centre.
