Applications are invited for the studentship in the area of time resolved spectroscopic imaging of novel photocatalysts for solar fuel synthesis. The studentship is co-funded by EPSRC and the Central Laser Facility (CLF, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory).ÌýThis is a joint project between University College London, and CLF. It will be jointly hosted at the CLF, the Catalysis Hub at the Research Complex at Harwell (RCaH) and at UCL. As such, the successful candidate will gain complementary and extensive knowledge in nanomaterials, solar fuel technology and applying state of the art spectroscopic instrumentation to characterise and understand new photocatalysts.

The goal of this project is to develop a unique system composed of a microscope and cutting edge, flexible, high data rate transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) to be used to the study of next-generation photocatalytic materials for water splitting and CO2 conversion to alcohols. The knowledge gained will be fed back to materials engineering to further improve solar to fuel conversion efficiency and also to stimulate further developments in time resolved spectroscopic imaging at the CLF.

The student will work in a multidisciplinary and dynamic research group within UCL and RCaH, and in the unique research environment of the CLF a national facility collocated with Diamond Light Source and the ISIS neutron facility. The student will be jointly supervised by Dr J Tang (Catalysis Hub, University College London) and Dr P Donaldson (CLF, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory).Ìý 

Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is only open to applicants from the UK and EU, who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years preceding their start on the programme or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK. The candidate should have, or expect to obtain, an upper second-class or first-class honours degree (or equivalent) in chemistry/materials science.
