As Ukraine approaches the second anniversary of the Russian full-scale invasion and marks the 10th year of war within its borders, the devastating toll on healthcare professionals has reached alarming proportions. According to the World Health Organization, more hospitals have been destroyed in Ukraine than in any other conflict to date although the media does not often focus on the scale and targeted destruction of health centres and health workers, both are war crimes.

More than 170 medics have been killed with Russian weapons as they try to save lives and more than 1208 attacks have targeted health centres, hospitals or ambulances over the past 24 months. The number of amputees now also surpasses the scale of WWI creating future challenges for rehabilitation of the disabled.

Ukrainian frontline medics, including those who have been held in captivity by Russian forces, are coming to UCL on 23rd of February. Their mission is to share firsthand accounts, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by medics operating in the war zone and resisting Russian aggression.

The talk also aims to provide insights into the impact of the Russian aggression on the healthcare system in Ukraine, contributing to the deeper understanding of the difficulties on the ground. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage with frontline medics through the Q&A session.

Participants of the talk:

• Iryna ‘Lucky’ KnyzhnykÌý– a dedicated member of the Hospitalliers Battalion since 2019, bravely provided treatment to wounded soldiers across various regions. Committed to resistance and service, Iryna's choice to master tactical medicine showcases her unwavering dedication to Ukraine.
• Brandon MitchellÌý– member of the Hospitalliers Battalion. Served in the Canadian military before moving to the UK to join the military there, and after the full-scale invasion, he came to Ukraine as a paramedic for Hospitalliers Battalion in 2022. He has dedicated his time as a volunteer.

The event will be moderated byÌýOksana Pyzik, Lecturer at UCL School of Pharmacy, Media Fellow and Global Health Advisor.

The event is organised by UCL SSEES, co-organizers include: UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies together with FRINGE: UCL's Centre for the Study of Social and Cultural Complexity, UCL Ukrainian Society, Ukraine Solidarity Project and UCL School of Pharmacy. The event is free and open to all.
