Language and Culture UG Handbook (Russian and History BA)

Russian and History BA

  • You must register for exactly 120 credits per year of study;
  • You must have taken and passed 90 credits of Level 6 modules by the end of the final year;
  • You are not permitted to take more than 150 credits of Level 4 modules over the course of your programme;
  • The Year Abroad must be passed

Year One

Compulsory Modules

You will take 60 credits from Russian language and culture modules and 60 Credits from History modules

•ÌýÌý ÌýSERS0004 - Use of Russian (Year 1) (15 Credits)

30 credits in Russian culture:
•ÌýÌý ÌýSERS0010 - The Making of Modern Russian Culture (15 Credits)

Optional Modules (15 credits) - choose one from the following:

•ÌýÌý ÌýSERS0008: Russian Short Fiction from Romanticism to Postmodernism (15 credits)

•ÌýÌý ÌýSERS0012: Representations of Russia (15 credits)

•ÌýÌý ÌýSERS0014: Russian Cinema: History, Ideology, Society (15 credits)

60 credits in History:
• Ìý EITHER: HIST0488 History of Russia 1598-1856
• Ìý OR: HIST0483 History of the Habsburg Monarchy 1700-1918

•ÌýÌý ÌýSEHI0003: Frontiers of History (30 credits)

In your second year, you must choose a total of 120 credits, 60 credits from Russian language and culture modules and 60 Credits from History modules.

Russian Language and Culture (60 credits)

Compulsory Modules: 30 credits in Russian language:

Compulsory module: 15 credits in Russian culture:
One 15-credit module from Year 2 Literature/Culture options, for example:
SERS0025 - Russian Poetry from Pushkin to Brodsky (15 Credits)

SERS0034 - The Petersburg 'Text' in Russian Literature and Culture: From Romanticism to Modernism

History (60 credits)

From selected Survey or Thematic History modules (60 credits). You may also take up to 15 credits in Level 6 Advanced Seminar modules - please consult the guidance supplied. A full list of modules can be found on the UCL History Website

Year Abroad

Your third year is spent abroad at an institution in Russia, taking 120 credits. You will normally spend this year studying at a university, but alternatives, such as work placements, may be possible. Further details are contained in the Year Abroad Handbook.Ìý

By the end of Year 4 you need to have taken a minimum of 90 credits in Level 6 modules over Years 2 and 4 together.

Russian language and culture (60 credits)

Compulsory Modules

15 credits in Russian language:

Optional Modules

•ÌýÌýÌý either 45 credits from optional Level 6 Russian language/culture modules. (View SSEES modules)
•ÌýÌýÌý or 30 credits from optional Level 6 Russian language/culture modules and 15 credits from modules with codes beginning SEEE

Optional modules may include a maximum of one further module in Russian language from:

History modules are delivered by the UCL HIstory Department. When choosing modules please make sure that you have at least 90 credits of Level 6 modules.
