AFRAB research workshop at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Ethiopia, 14 June 2024

Alexander Meckelburg and the Ethiopian team of researchers have continued to collect and analyse sources containing the anti-slavery arguments of different Ethiopian authors active in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Michelle Liebst and Saadu Hashim of Fort Jesus Museum organized a consultation with representatives of Mombasa-based groups connected in various ways to the past that will be evoked in the exhibition “East African Voices Against Slavery” hosted by Fort Jesus Museum and Heritage Centre from 12 September 2024.


AFRAB participation at conference for Professor Mouctar Bah, Maroua University, May 2024

A conference in honour of the lifetime work of Professor Thierno Mouctar Bah was organised at the University of Maroua in Northern Cameroon on 8-10 May 2024.


American Historical Association Conference, San Francisco, January 2024: AFRAB panel

The first collective publication of the AFRAB Project was the special issue “African Legal Abolitions” published in Volume 42 of the Law & History Review. Some contributors to the Special Issue presented their articles at a panel at the American Historical Association’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco on 4-7 January 2024.


‘Slavery and Post-slavery in Modern African History’ Conference, Tanzania, 2023

AFRAB’s researchers contributed to the scientific organisation of the major international conference ‘Slavery and Post-slavery in Modern African History’ hosted by the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 7-9 November 2023.

Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) of Dakar, Senegal, organised a major conference to celebrate the lifetime achievements and contributions of Professor Ibrahima Thioub, Senegalese historian, retired professor of history at UCAD, and former President (Recteur) of the Université Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar (2014-2020).


European Conference on African Studies (ECAS): AFRAB Panels, Friday 2 June 2023

AFRAB organised a double panel at the European Conference on Afican Studies that in 2023 was hosted at the University of Cologne.

AFRAB’s researchers met to discuss the research design, methodology, and initial findings of the three Masters students supervised by Tanzania’s team coordinator, UDSM professor Salvatory Nyanto.


AFRAB research workshop at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa, May 2023

AFRAB’s researchers met to discuss research in progress in Ethiopia, review findings in different Ethiopian regions to date, and start preparing the activity ‘African Abolitionist Voices’ that would eventually result in an exhibition at the University of Dar es Salaam in November 2023 and then in an expanded, Ethiopia focused exhibition at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies in October 2024.

“Afterlives of Slavery” Conference in Monrovia, Liberia, October 2022

AFRAB’s fourth workshop took place in Monrovia in parallel with the “Afterlives of Slavery” International Conference, hosted by the University of Liberia and Princeton Theological Seminary (New Jersey, USA) on 17-19 October 2022.

AFRAB’s third workshop happened alongside the 21st International Conference of Ethiopian Studies, hosted by AFRAB’s partner, the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University.


Slafco2 Conference, Cameroon

AFRAB’s second workshop took place in the framework of the important Slafco2 Conference “Slavery in Africa: Knowledge and Openings” hosted by the Université de Yaoundé 1, in Cameroon on 19-21 April 2022.


The Legal Abolition of Slavery in African History: Rethinking Frameworks, Chronologies, and Comparisons

Workshop organized in the framework of the AFRAB Project, in collaboration with the SLAFNET Project. The workshop will take place online on 21-24 Sept 2021.
